The six core domains defined the Digital Library Reference Model (V1.0), that is, content, functionality, policy, quality, user and architecture, are identifiable in nearly every Digital Library currently in use. These domains thus serve as an essential starting point for a diverse set of people, spanning DL researchers, system designers & developers building a DL, and content providers seeking to deliver content using DL technologies.
The Digital Library Manifesto in the DL Reference Model (V1.0) offers a brief description of these six domains. Five are connected with the definition of a DL: Content, Functionality, Policy, Quality and User, while the sixth domain is inextricably bound with the definition of a DL System, that is, Architecture. The Digital Library Reference Model, V1.0, explores each domain in greater detail in Section 2.
DL.org brings together experts in the field through its six Working Groups, dedicated to each of the core domains and chartered with investigating the interoperability research and development that is needed, enhancing the current Reference Model, and contributing to the planned Technology & Methodology Cookbook.
Each domain is briefly outlined in the dedicated pages on this section of the website. More details on these concepts and on the current expert investigations into them can be found on our Tech Wiki.
The Working Groups meet periodically through virtual tools and physically.Summaries of the first six face-to-face meetings in summer 2009 can be downloaded below.
