1st Face-to-Face meeting of the DL.org Functionality Working Group, 29-30 June 2009, Athens, Greece

Scientific Chair: Dagobert Soergel, University of Maryland, USA

The first face-to-face meeting of the Functionality Working Group took place 29/30June 2009 in Athens. Experts forming part of the group in Athens include Dagobert Soergel (University of Maryland), Ed Fox (Virginia Tech), Andreas Rauber (Vienna University of Technology), Carlo Meghini (National Research Centre of Italy), Katerina Iatropoulou and Natalia Manola University of Athens, and George Kakaletris. The members of the Working Group had the opportunity to exchange experiences and expertise and open fruitful interactions designed to identify the main interoperability issues pertaining to the Functionality Domain, as well as to propose how to enhance the DELOS Reference Model within the scope of this group.

Day 1

Eleni Toli, University of Athens kicked off the meeting with a presentation of the DL.org project, its objectives and its expected impact with George Athanasopoulos, from the same institution, provided an overview of the Functionality WG, its objectives, the goals of meeting and how the group with work together through dedicated collaboration tools. .

Dagobert Soergel focused on the DELOS Reference Model with particular reference to the Functionality Domain, prompting feedback, thoughts and ideas, moving forward. With regard to key challenges and issues for advances in DL systems, all members discussed experiences and previous work connected with interoperability from the perspective of functionality.

Day 2

Discussions focused on open issues and ideas from a functionality viewpoint with the aim of expanding on the scope of the group by starting to define the notion of interoperability. Feedback on the DELOS Reference Model and its enhancement within the scope of the group was also a topic of discussion and key moving forward. Emphasis was placed on identifying target audiences and end-users of the Reference Model, the level of formality needed to define relevant concepts and associations, missing concepts, mis-modelled aspects that need more careful consideration, identifying key functions and related interoperability issues. A set of use-cases was also provided to serve as a facilitator in identifying interoperability issues.

Additionally, group members explored the possibility of a demonstrator which would deal with interoperability concerns of a specific integration scenario. Such a scenario relating to the integration of functionality offered by D4Science and DRIVER-II projects was also proposed. To find out more about this DL.org Working Group, visit the dedicated wiki.

The group will now build on these outcomes in coming months, presenting the main outcomes at the DL.org Workshop 1 October 2009 within ECDL2009, Corfu, Greece.
