Research & Education in Digital Libraries

A one-day seminar jointly organised by DL.org European project, DILL International Master and the University of Parma

More events like this are needed where participants are chartered with exploring a range of discussion points, building bridges and consensus on the best way forward.

Digital Libraries are a new research topic, opening up important opportunities for a multi-faceted approach spanning information seeking behaviour and social processes such as learning and knowledge sharing, in addition to Digital Libraries as collections of content that need curation (collection, description, preservation, retrieval and so forth). As such, Digital Libraries research opens up important opportunities for a multi-faceted approach spanning information seeking behaviour and social processes such as learning and knowledge sharing, in addition to Digital Libraries as collections of content that need curation, ranging from collection and description to preservation and retrieval, among others.

In early November 2010, DL.org joined forces with the Digital Library Learning (DILL) Master Programme funded by the EC's Erasmus Mundus initiative to energise thinking on  the steps needed to ensure closer co-operation between the findings and outputs of projects like DL.org and the wider research and educational communities.

Specifically, the Seminar:

  • Deliberated how to implement a pan-European mechanism for exchanging, sharing and integrating research results into education in digital libraries.
  • Fostered the definition of research topics suitable for PhD students to facilitate the integration of research in European projects and research conducted by universities
  • Explored ways in which DL.org's findings and outputs on interoperability  can be transferred to education in Digital Libraries.

Main Outcomes

  • Interviews with educationalists and master students to explore the value-add of the Seminar and how  its outcomes might be taken forward:Prof. Anna Maria Tammaro, University of Parma: Thought Leadership on Digital Library Learning and Marcial Reyes Batiancila, Master Student from The Philippines: Digital Library Learning through the Eyes of a Master Student
